Caring for Sacred Beads: Storage, Cleansing, and Respect

Between uses, malas are traditionally stored in a soft pouch or cloth, away from direct sunlight and humidity, which can affect both the cord and the beads' natural oils over time.

Cleansing is usually a light, infrequent practice — a soft dry cloth for dust, and occasionally a very light wipe with a barely damp cloth if needed. Soaking or submerging beads is best avoided, as it can affect the cord and the bead's surface.

How a mala is stored and handled is often as much about respect for the practice as it is about practical upkeep, so many people keep a dedicated space for it separate from everyday jewelry.
